Clinical evaluation of cefbuperazone in urinary tract infections

Abstract
Cefbuperazone (T-1982), a newly developed cephamycin antibiotic, was studied for its clinical efficacy in 30 cases of UTI, 19 with acute pyelonephritis and 11 with cystitis.
The drug was administered by IV bolus injection or IV drip infusion at a dose of 1 gm twice a day for the period of 3 to 9 days.
The clinical results were as follows:
1) The therapeutic responses were excellent in 9 cases (30%), good in 17 cases (57%), fair in 1 case (3%)
and poor in 3 cases (10%). Thus the efficacy rate was 88%.
2) Bacteriological eradiation was noted in 17 out of 19 cases (89.5%) in which causative organisms were isolated.
E. coli, klebsiella, Enterobacter showed good response to CBPZ, whereas S. fecalis and Pseudomonas showed poor response.
3) As for side effects associated with the drug, skin eruption was noted in one case and any significant hematologic, hepatic and renal toxicity was not noted.
